Where do I find a charity to donate a car to for a tax deduction?
This is a commonly asked questions for many people who are considering donating their automobile to charity. The act of donating is the primary reason people seek out a charity but many people ae also looking for the tax break as well. Rightly so because this makes it a win win situation for both the donor and the charity.
So how do you go about finding a charity that is guaranteed to be tax exempt? It isn’t always recommended to take the charities word for it. In the case of a national well known charity like the red cross you can be assured you are getting the tax break. With some smaller not so well know charities you have to do your research before donating otherwise you might have a surprise at tax time.
The best place (and only place to look in my opinion) is to search through the IRS database for charities that fall under Publication 78, Cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code. By searching this database you can find the specific charity you are thinking of donating to and be assured that you will truly get the tax deduction.
If you have to believe anyone about tax deductions and who qualifies as a organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions the IRS is the one. They make the rules so be sure to follow their information and not that of some charities.
